Growth

Values In Action - Growth

At Tolin Mechanical, growth isn’t just a value we believe in—it’s something we live every day. Few stories reflect that better than Matt Borgelt’s.

Matt’s journey with Tolin began ten years ago, when he joined the team as a delivery driver in logistics. From day one, his commitment and curiosity stood out. It wasn’t long before he transitioned into a dual service and projects role, where he began laying the foundation for what would become a remarkable career.

Recognizing his passion and potential, Matt made the leap into a full-time service role and enrolled in an apprenticeship program. His dedication paid off as he completed the program and quickly stepped up as a leader within his service group, mentoring his peers and raising the bar for excellence.

But Matt’s growth didn’t stop in the field. Through the WSCC pilot program, he earned a degree while continuing to perform at a high level on the job. Now, he’s paying it forward by stepping into an instructor role through Local 208 and WSCC—helping to train the next generation of technicians.

Today, Matt continues to take on greater responsibility, working on high-profile projects while mentoring younger technicians in the group. His commitment to personal development and team success is a powerful example of what growth at Tolin Mechanical truly looks like.

This August, Matt celebrates his 10-year anniversary with the company. We’re proud to recognize his incredible journey—and we’re even more excited to see where his path leads next.

Partnership

Values In Action - Partnership

Several years ago, we were approached by the Colorado Department of Corrections regarding assistance in replacing the refrigeration systems at their facilities. They struggled to find a company who could assist until they partnered with Tolin.

The SoCo office for Tolin has been integral in building a great relationship with the CDOC and their preferred engineers, that we were involved from the very beginning to help to design the project, establishing budgets, and setting us up strategically to win the project even though they have to put them out to public bid. What set us apart was the willingness to help them from start to finish with design etc. Our sales team, Ashli Bessey, and our operations and install team, Tim Bejarano and Justin Harnick, have been paramount in growing that relationship by performing the projects at a high level of efficiency without any headaches to the customer. We were able to even get them to sign huge 5-year full maintenance agreements at 2 of the sites due to the relationship we created and being willing to complete all the paperwork that goes along with it all.

Innovation

Values In Action - Innovation

A recent weekend, we took an emergency repair call for a non-customer up in Estes Park, a fairly remote location. This non-customer was a site we have been pursuing as a customer for years, but they had never used us. The situation was urgent, and the customer was a little desperate for a solution. Our technician was willing to take the call and head up to Estes Park. Typically, we don’t take non-customer calls on the weekend, so we were already being open to growth in helping a non-customer.

Once there, our tech diagnosed the problem, but repair required a critical part to fix the system. Without missing a beat, the technician communicated the challenge to the team and the maintenance sales rep, demonstrating remarkable dedication and teamwork, and drove to Denver on the weekend. They coordinated access to the parts house and managed to open it on a weekend to retrieve the crucial component. Then, they drove the part up to Estes Park, so the repair could happen that day, and not require the technician to make the 3 hour round trip to complete the same task.

These things happen every day here. People are going above and beyond to better serve our customers and our potential new ones. It’s the innovated mind set of the tech and the team in Fort Collins to provide solutions to the clients that trust the partnership that they get when they use Tolin for our services.

Growth

Values In Action - Growth

Growth, particularly in our employees, is probably my favorite of our values to showcase. We demonstrate our commitment to this with training, with mentorship, by continually looking for ways to help individuals refine their craft and develop new skills. But, if you look around at the many tenured employees at Tolin, one thing that will stand out is how many of them started at Tolin in a different position than they currently hold.

A couple of things that make that possible is the natural transition of people retiring or choosing a different path, and new positions being developed to accommodate our growth as a company. But, most notably, we recognize the value an existing employee offers in filling those newly available positions and, not only encourage interested employees to apply, but seek employees who may not have expressed interest, but their skills are perfect for the position.

Nearly our entire executive team is comprised of people who represent this value. Nearly our entire middle management group is the same. Nearly all supervisors are the same. These are people who began their career at Tolin in a different role and, because of this value, have grown into the positions they currently hold.

Rachel Calkins began her career at Tolin 9 ½ years ago as an Administrative Assistant. She took on the crucial responsibility of managing our 400+ licenses spanning several states, ensuring everything stayed up to date, and applied for new licenses as frequently needed. She provided essential sales support, creating or serving as a backup for creating all Service Agreements that went to customers from 2015 to 2022. She also began training new members of our team in the various tasks our department is responsible for. During that time, she also took the lead in planning two of our largest company events: Customer Appreciation Day and the Holiday Party.

Shortly after the Admin Department was absorbed into HR, she was promoted to Human Resources Supervisor and was again entrusted with training new team members and guiding them in managing licenses and Service Agreements, while learning the processes of HR and continuing to be my main support. Rachel’s growth at Tolin is a testament to her unwavering work ethic, adaptability, and dedication. From Administrative Assistant to Human Resources Manager, Rachel’s growth continues to be on an upward path.

Respect

Values In Action - Respect

Scott's story at Tolin began back in 2007. I vividly remember the day I trained him as a delivery driver, showing him the ropes for delivering paychecks to the storage drops. He was so young and earnest, and I couldn't help but notice how respectful he was for his age. Little did I know then that this enthusiastic young driver would one day be leading the logistics department.

Fast forward 17 years, and Scott has indeed come a long way. For the past few years, he has been managing the logistics department with dedication and excellence. Witnessing his growth at Tolin has been nothing short of inspiring. It's truly special to see how so many individuals here at Tolin have risen through the ranks and taken on leadership roles.
Scott's journey is a testament to his hard work and his embodiment of our core values, especially respect. He is kind, patient, and faces every challenge with unwavering composure. His growth and success are a source of pride for all of us at Tolin.

I am genuinely proud to know Scott and to have the privilege of working alongside him. His story is a shining example of what can be achieved with dedication and the right attitude.
